Jeremiah finishes speaking Jeremiah completes his address to “all the people,” signaling the end of the message event. Literary Context
This line functions as a narrative hinge. In the previous chapter Jeremiah relayed Yahweh’s answer about whether the remnant should stay in Judah or go to Egypt, including warnings and promises, after the people asked him to seek guidance (Jeremiah 42:1–22). Jeremiah 43:1 marks the end of that delivery and prepares the reader for the reaction that follows in the next verses. The wording emphasizes that the prophet’s speech is presented as a complete, commissioned message, not a partial report.
Historical Context
The setting is the fragile period after Jerusalem’s fall to Babylon, when a remaining community in Judah struggled with fear, leadership conflict, and the threat of reprisals. People were debating whether to remain under Babylonian oversight in the land or flee toward Egypt for perceived safety. Jeremiah is pictured as an established prophetic figure whose counsel had repeatedly clashed with political strategies. This verse situates his role as messenger: he publicly communicates the full directive attributed to Yahweh to the gathered community.

The verse also frames the speech as commissioned. The content is repeatedly identified as “the words of Yahweh their God,” and Jeremiah is described as having been “sent” with those words. On the surface level, the text is concerned with source (Yahweh), messenger (Jeremiah), audience (the people), and completeness (nothing left out).
Two questions can be read more narrowly or more broadly:
The verse uses repeated “all” language (three times) and repeats the identification “Yahweh their God.” That invites readers to decide whether the narrator is simply closing a scene in standard storytelling fashion, or intentionally underlining accountability: the people received the full message from their God through his sent spokesman.
Explicitly, the verse asserts that Jeremiah completed his speech to the people, and that what he said is presented as Yahweh’s full set of words delivered through a sent messenger (Jeremiah 43:1). Theologically by inference, the narrative is setting responsibility on the hearers: before any response is narrated, the text establishes that the message is complete, publicly communicated, and attributed to “Yahweh their God.”
