Jeremiah answers with blunt realism. He expects danger if he speaks and futility if he advises (explicit in v.15). In other words, the prophet sees truth-telling as costly and expects the king’s “request for counsel” may not lead to obedience.

Zedekiah responds with a private oath in Yahweh’s name (explicit in v.16). He invokes Yahweh as the living God and as the giver of life, and he promises two protections: he will not execute Jeremiah, and he will not hand him over to the officials seeking his life.

Where interpretation differs

Two main questions are left open by the text.

First, Jeremiah’s fear in v.15: is he mainly afraid the king himself will kill him, or that the king will allow others to do it? The text includes both possibilities: Jeremiah directly addresses the king about death, and the king later mentions “these men who seek your life.”

Second, how firm the oath really is: the king promises safety, but the oath is “secret,” which may imply limited ability to protect Jeremiah publicly or consistently.

Why the disagreement exists The narrative gives limited detail about motives and logistics. The “third entry” is not explained, the oath is private, and the political players (“these men”) are only briefly named. That forces interpreters to weigh clues: secrecy, the king’s wording, and the larger context of pressure from officials.

What this passage clearly contributes It shows a constrained kingship and a vulnerable prophet in Jerusalem’s crisis. The king seeks truthful speech yet tries to manage it privately. Jeremiah’s stance highlights that prophetic truth can be dangerous and often ignored. The king’s oath, invoking Yahweh as living and life-giving, shows that even in political maneuvering, Yahweh’s name is treated as the ultimate witness to promises—while the secrecy hints the promise may be hard to enforce in a divided court (all grounded in Jeremiah 38:14–16).
