11:8-10Meaning
Returning to danger and the daylight picture The disciples remind Jesus that “the Jews” had recently tried to stone him and question the wisdom of going back. Jesus responds with a picture of a normal day: there are “twelve hours” to walk and work by daylight. A person walking in the day does not stumble because he can see by “the light of this world.” But walking at night brings stumbling because the “light” is not in him. In context, the reply functions as a way of saying that the timing and path are not random; there is a right “time to walk,” and danger does not cancel the mission.
