Literary Context
Joshua 13 sits in the larger section where Israel’s territory is identified and apportioned. The chapter begins with unfinished areas and a command to divide the land (13:1–7), then reviews what Moses had already assigned east of the Jordan to certain tribes (13:8–32). Verse 33 functions as a concluding reminder attached to that distribution list: even while describing fixed borders and towns for other groups, the text restates that Levi stands apart. This prepares for later allotment material where Levi’s situation is handled differently (e.g., towns rather than a normal tribal region).
