141:3Meaning
A guarded mouth The speaker asks Yahweh to “set a watch” in front of the mouth and to “keep the door” of the lips. The point is not silence for its own sake, but prevention: words should not slip out unchecked, as though the mouth were an entrance that needs protection.
Unit 2 (v. 4a): A guarded heart
Next the request shifts inward: “Don’t incline my heart to any evil thing.” The speaker is asking not to be steered toward wrongdoing at the level of desire and intention, before actions even begin.
Unit 3 (v. 4b): A guarded path with wrongdoers
The speaker specifies the danger: being pulled into “deeds of wickedness” alongside “men who work iniquity.” The worry is participation—doing what they do and becoming associated with their way of life.
Unit 4 (v. 4c): A guarded appetite for their pleasures
Finally, the speaker asks not to “eat of their delicacies.” This portrays temptation as attractive and enjoyable, and also hints at social belonging; the speaker prays not to be won over by what looks desirable.
