Humility in Scripture is a truthful, sober view of oneself before God that refuses pride and status-seeking. Romans connects humility to grace (so there is no room for boasting) and to life in a shared community where different gifts serve a common good. It also warns groups against arrogance toward other groups within God’s people.
This theme appears in passages such as Philippians, Zephaniah, 1 Peter, Ruth, where the Bible develops it through story, instruction, warning, and promise. In Philippians 2:1–4 Paul appeals to shared spiritual realities as the basis for a specific outcome: his joy being “filled up” by the community’s unity. He asks them to think and love in the same direction, not acting from rivalry or self-display. Zephaniah 2:1–3 is a fast, urgent appeal to Judah to respond before a set time runs out. The prophet tells a “shameless” nation to assemble, then repeats “before” to stress how near the coming day is.
Start with Philippians 2:3, Zephaniah 2:3, 1 Peter 2:1, then follow the related passages in their own setting before drawing broad conclusions.
A theme page is strongest when it follows the Bible's own contexts. The goal is not to collect matching words, but to see how repeated ideas develop across passages, books, and the whole biblical story.
2In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel: and Yahweh your God said to you, You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.
3So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Yahweh; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of Yahweh by Samuel.
29It happened, as the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David dancing and playing; and she despised him in her heart.
16Then David the king went in, and sat before Yahweh; and he said, Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?
17This was a small thing in your eyes, God; but you have spoken of your servant`s house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, Yahweh God.
18What can David [say] yet more to you concerning the honor which is done to your servant? for you know your servant.
19Yahweh, for your servant`s sake, and according to your own heart, have you worked all this greatness, to make known all [these] great things.
20Yahweh, there is none like you, neither is there any God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
16David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of Yahweh standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
17David said to God, Isn`t it I who commanded the people to be numbered? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Yahweh my God, be against me, and against my father`s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.
14But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of you, and of your own have we given you.
15For we are strangers before you, and sojourners, as all our fathers were: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no abiding.
16Yahweh our God, all this store that we have prepared to build you a house for your holy name comes of your hand, and is all your own.
18Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this forever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of your people, and prepare their heart to you;
1Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking,
8Finally, be all like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous,
5Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;
7casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
8Solomon said to God, You have showed great lovingkindness to David my father, and have made me king in his place.
9Now, Yahweh God, let your promise to David my father be established; for you have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.
10Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this your people, that is so great?
12When he humbled himself, the wrath of Yahweh turned from him, so as not to destroy him altogether: and moreover in Judah there were good things [found].
6Then the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, Yahweh is righteous.
7When Yahweh saw that they humbled themselves, the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves: I will not destroy them; but I will grant them some deliverance, and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.
18Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on Yahweh, the God of their fathers.
12He stood before the altar of Yahweh in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread forth his hands
13(for Solomon had made a brazen scaffold, five cubits long, and five cubits broad, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court; and on it he stood, and kneeled down on his knees before all the assembly of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven;)
14and he said, Yahweh, the God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven, or on earth; who keep covenant and lovingkindness with your servants, who walk before you with all their heart;
14if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
19This is John`s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
20He confessed, and didn`t deny, but he confessed, "I am not the Christ."
21They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No."
22They said therefore to him, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, `Make straight the way of the Lord,` as Isaiah the prophet said."
24Most assuredly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.
25He who loves his life will lose it. He who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.
26If anyone serves me, let him follow me. Where I am, there will my servant also be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
12So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?
13You call me, `Teacher` and `Lord.` You say so correctly, for so I am.
14If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another`s feet.
15For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.
16Most assuredly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him.
17If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and was going to God,
4arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
5Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples` feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
27John answered, "A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.
28You yourselves testify about me, that I said, `I am not the Christ,` but, `I have been sent before him.`
29He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom`s voice. This, my joy, therefore is made full.
30He must increase, but I must decrease.
41I don`t receive glory from men.
42But I know you, that you don`t have God`s love in yourselves.
43I have come in my Father`s name, and you don`t receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
44How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don`t seek the glory that comes from the only God?
15Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain by himself.
16Jesus therefore answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.
17If anyone desires to do his will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is from God, or if I speak from myself.
18He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
19But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered up when I know how you are doing.
20For I have no one else like-minded, who will truly care about you.
21For they all seek their own, not the things of Jesus Christ.
22But you know the proof of him, that, as a child serves a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the gospel.
25But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need;
26since he longed for you all, and was very troubled, because you had heard that he was sick.
27For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.
28I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when you see him again, you may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
29Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such in honor,
30because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.
3doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself;
4each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.
5Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus,
6who, existing in the form of God, didn`t consider it robbery to be equal with God,
7but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.
8Being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.
9Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name;
10that at the name of Jesus every knee would bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,
11and that every tongue would confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father.
2When pride comes, then comes shame, But with humility comes wisdom.
33The fear of Yahweh teaches wisdom. Before honor is humility.
19It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, Than to divide the plunder with the proud.
12Before destruction the heart of man is proud, But before honor is humility.
4The result of humility and the fear of Yahweh Is wealth, honor, and life.
6Don`t exalt yourself in the presence of the king, Or claim a place among great men;
7For it is better that it be said to you, "Come up here," Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom your eyes have seen.
2Let another man praise you, And not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.
23A man`s pride brings him low, But one who is of a lowly spirit gains honor.
34Surely he mocks the mockers, But he gives grace to the humble.
32"If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, Or if you have thought evil, Put your hand over your mouth.
10Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said to him, Why have I found favor in your sight, that you should take knowledge of me, seeing I am a foreigner?
13Then she said, Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, because you have comforted me, and because you have spoken kindly to your handmaid, though I am not as one of your handmaidens.
17So she gleaned in the field until even; and she beat out that which she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley.
5She said to her, All that you say I will do.
9He said, Who are you? She answered, I am Ruth your handmaid: spread therefore your skirt over your handmaid; for you are a near kinsman.
3Seek Yahweh, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh`s anger.
7The coast will be for the remnant of the house of Judah. They will find pasture. In the houses of Ashkelon, they will lie down in the evening, for Yahweh, their God, will visit them, and restore them.
11In that day you will not be put to shame for all your doings, in which you have transgressed against me; for then I will take away out of the midst of you your proudly exulting ones, and you will no more be haughty in my holy mountain.
12But I will leave in the midst of you an afflicted and poor people, and they will take refuge in the name of Yahweh.
13The remnant of Israel will not do iniquity, nor speak lies, neither will a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth, for they will feed and lie down, and no one will make them afraid."
